The space has been jam-packed from the moment it opened and is drawing very positive reviews for the game-changing nature of it’s design. I stopped by on Sunday night at 8pm and the seating area in front (approximately 50 seats) was full and the line for food from the four serving areas (bar, hot food buffet, gelato, Starbucks) was consistent. The staffing appeared to be pretty good as well although one of the complaints I’ve heard is that service is still slow. To be expected in a new facility and one that is drawing a crowd at what has been a ghost period downtown in the past. Only Nonna’s and Mudhouse have been consistent performers on Sunday evenings and never have I seen a crowd like this in six years of downtown living.

I mention acclaim. Where’s it coming from?

That’s right, I’m shopping for my sister and Mom and rather than another ‘thing’ to clutter up their households (we’ve all had a few years to fill our homes) I’ve settled on a Rain Barrel solution. It doesn’t hurt that both households enjoy maintaining simple gardens and potted plants outside and I know this is going to go over well. Check this out from the James River Basin Partnership website.

Using a rain barrel is a perfect way to provide nice soft water to your plants, conserve fresh water, and help correct stormwater runoff problems. Water is collected off your roof and used later for your non-potable water needs. An average home with a roof size of 1,000 square feet will generate approximately 600 gallons of water from a 1-inch rainfall. With our Save it FROM a Rainy Day program we are offering two different style rain barrels through two local partnerships. An instant rebate is available to Green County residents thanks to the City of Springfield, Greene County Resource Management, and City Utilities.

You can see examples at the Downtown Farmer’s Market on Fridays from 6-9pm on Park Central East. They indicated they have Farmer’s Market Specials as well!

We’ve signed on the dotted line; the Moxie has sold. Couldn’t be more proud and excited to transition from owner to supporter.

The word on the street is that there is an ownership group of local families who have applied for non-profit status for the theater. That would fit with Nicole’s comments in April on the Moxie blog noting – We will be selective on who takes over, because we don’t want to see this business in the wrong hands

An inside look at the early build-out stage of the new Price-Cutter facility in downtown Springfield. The key? Check out the refrigerator installation in the back of this photo shot on my iPhone 3Gs. That’s a definite sign that fresh milk and related dairy products will be available downtown in the near futures.

From the Price-Cutter blog in December 2009

An urban market in downtown Springfield may open as soon as spring, as RPCS Inc., the parent company of Price Cutter stores, is in the final stages of developing plans for the downtown shop.

“There’s 90 percent we will do it, and 10 percent we won’t,” said Erick Taylor, the ever-cautious president of RPCS. “We are still making the decision.”

Morris Dock, who owns the former Wheeler’s building at South Avenue and Walnut Street, said RPCS has signed a 10-year contract to lease the 10,000 square feet on the first floor of the building.

The grocery chain also has access to the 25 parking spaces south of the building, Dock said.

Taylor can opt out in the first 10 years, but he also can extend the lease for another 15 years, Dock said. “Erick is looking at a long-term investment,” Dock said. “He is committed to it.”

The downtown grocery store was first rumored to be coming last year, especially after students at Missouri State University — for a class project — sought public input to brand the future store at the 2008 annual Taste of Springfield event.

Here’s some background fom the Springfield Business Journal

The first of the city’s wayfinding signs is scheduled to be installed this morning.

Nixa-based Modern Neon will install the first sign near Springfield-Branson National Airport, on the west side of Airport Boulevard south of the traffic roundabout. The sign aims to guide travelers to the three city districts represented in the program: the Battlefield/Glenstone retail corridor, the Bass Pro retail area and downtown.

The sign program is supposed to increase awareness of the city’s major retail destinations, and identify parking options in those areas, according to a city news release. It is mostly funded by the quarter-cent capital improvements sales tax and is expected to cost more than $604,000 for design, fabrication and installation. The sales tax covered just less than $500,000 of the total cost.

Wayfinding sign, Commercial Street headed West

That’s an example of a parking sign on Commercial Street above, if you are traveling from West to East. But here’s what you see if you are traveling from East to West.

Pretty cool huh. Oh, and before you leave, check out this recent discussion of urban parking by Professor Andy Cline, Missouri State University – OUR URBAN CHALLENGE: FREE PARKING that included a visit to the parking spaces associated with the signs:

Dr. Donald Shoup wrote a book called The High Cost of Free Parking in which he argued that too many American cities just give away their most valuable real estate in the form of free parking spaces. The usual cry from business owners in response is: “But we’ll drive away customers if we charge for parking.”

Thanks for stopping by!

It’s hard to find someone who hasn’t been there and most folks do enjoy themselves. Me – after 5 years of downtown living I’m on a first name basis with the bar staff and can say I’ve spent more of my disposable income for dining there then at any other restaurant in town.

That’s not something I’m necessarily proud of. The one thing that brings me back is their Traditional Margarita, made with tequila, their knock off brand of orange liqueur and two squeezed limes. Very enjoyable although at $7.50 apiece, it gets expensive quickly. And have I ever been offered a gratis drink, for being a loyal customer? Nah, and that’s what leads me to ‘the other side of the coin’.

The food? No complaints so long as they keep it in the microwave long enough before delivering. Renowned for their speed of service, it’s due to the fact that everything is pre-made and when you can’t even heat it up properly… It’s time to walk away. I’m out searching for an alternative, even if it means getting in my car. I’m leaving Maria’s to the downtown touristas.

Maybe the new summer menu at Mudlounge will fit the bill!

Ozark Mountain Daredevils

A local blogger in Springfield, one who has made a name for himself for his coverage of the City Council among other areas, also has a fine sense of humor. In 2008, he announced on April 1st he was running for Mayor. The local drink and party rag immediately picked up the story, only to rue their timeliness in falling for the joke and the delivery method, racing to be first rather than correct.

This year, Jason posted a story that announced a series of concerts being sponsored by the Park District. The Convention and Visitors Board immediately posted the information on their website, not waiting for formal notice from the Park Board. Apparently some other ‘media outlets’ who should know better also posted the information, leading to this response on Jason’s website:

It looks like this year’s April Fool’s joke on Life of Jason has been targeted toward the Park Board. This fictitious lineup of entertainers was not released by the Park Board. We ask that the administrator of this site please remove the misleading information immediately. A formal release from Parks Public Information Administrator Bob Nelson will be released shortly to all local media. Unfortunately, the fictitious information has already mislead several citizens and local media outlets. For more information, contact the Park Board directly at (417) 864-1049 or visit our official Web site at http://www.parkboard.org.
- Bob Nelson, Springfield-Greene County Park Board

It’s an interesting choice of words – target. I heard through a reliable source that Mr Nelson was unhappy having to handle the calls that came in given his already busy day as a public citizen. Yet when he and the City are trying to get the word out about their latest pet project, Jason’s website is one of the first ones they go to. Is that ‘having your cake and eating it too?’ Maybe they and the CVB should remove “Life of Jason” from their publicity distribution lists. Oh, and for those who missed the posting, it was a well written one until the final few listings, which as Jason himself notes:

I really thought after last year’s April Fool’s Joke that my readers would stop and look at the calendar and think there would be no way our Park Board could afford to bring in Robert Plant and Allison Krauss for a free concert.

One other fine pairing that had the locals drooling, rather then checking their sources, was Big Smith in combination with The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. The Devil’s don’t get together often, the last time was a well-documented affair at the Gillioz. So for those of you who need a fix, here’s a reliable source.

Wildwood Springs Lodge Presents the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. November 5th,6th and 7th, 2009 at The Midwest’s Premier Acoustic Venue located in Steelville MO. Sign up here for their Monthly Newsletter
